First floor / site plan in progress... [original plot at 3/32" = 1'-0"]
1. studio 1
A. studio 1 wild flower terrace
2. studio 2
B. studio 2 wild flower terrace
3. studio 3
C. studio 3 wild flower terrace
*Studios are divided by shoji partitions with multiple operable and removable panels to allow for flexible studio use and interaction. The translucent paper covered wood screens allow for light to filter between studios and into the exhibit flex space. Each studio will have access and egress to an outdoor wild flower terrace. Diffused light from the light shells above will flow down the North edge of the studios. Indirect lighting will be provided deeper into the space from the South wall of each studio through the use of a light shelf.
4. exhibit/flex space
5. digital lab
6. server room
7. warming kitchen
8. female toilet room
9. male toilet room
10. lobby / security
11. main entry
12. main stair
Rear stair is still under development as I look at accessing the lower mechanical level via a sloped drive. It will function essentially as a "fire escape". All student traffic will go past the main security desk.
The exhibit flex space is accessible for student use as a "spill out" and pin up area. Mobile tack surfaces and whiteboards will be provided for student use. Storage to be located on the lower level near mechanical and electrical rooms. The elevator will need to be enlarged to provide verticle circulation of stored tables, chairs, etc. while providing accessibility to the student lounge and rooms on the second floor.

Rick, I think you are going in the right direction with your plan. I'd love to see the resolution of the second floor, especially the elevator connection. Did you loose the "monumental stair connection up to the dorm rooms? That would be clean but mean. Having everybody move from the center of the site to the far extreme (stair in the corner) and back, possibly to th eother extreme, if you are so lucky to have the last room on the spine, is not very friendly. But the parti is very cleanly executed. Is ther still a common space upstairs? No connection from that to the downstairs?
I like the idea of the shoji screens. Two challenges arise with that concept: there is no privacy in the individual studios; no security (leaving laptops while going to lunch or to bed)?
Werner... I am pretty satisfied with this resolution of the first floor. I never really considered a monumental stair up to the student rooms. I'm a big meanie! Anyway, the idea does have some merit. Don't see the second floor changing much from the intensive crit. Student lounge (common space) will still be located above the exhibit flex space. I may add a stair near the elevator to connect the two. I am working on another model to resolve the structure a bit more accurately and the week 6 assignments. Hopefully I'll be able to get to a drawn second floor plan shortly.
The challenge of security could be addressed a couple of ways. I think that utilizing various computer locking systems to work desks would be most appropriate along with secure storage for each student through lockable units at each student desk.
As far as privacy goes, I really envision the studio as a free and flexible open work space. I don't see privacy as being a necessity. If there was a need for the typical classroom setting, a classroom over at the main building could be scheduled.
The exhibit flex space is an extension of the studio. Small groups could meet and discuss the days work by assembling in groups spread across the first floor and mobile whiteboards and tack surfaces.
